What is laser eye surgery?

Laser surgery is a medical procedure that uses laser light, instead of a scalpel, to remove tissue. In laser eye surgery, a laser emits a concentrated but painless ultraviolet light to remove microscopic amounts of the surface layer of the cornea, reshaping it to permanently correct refractive errors.

The excimer laser is a cool type of laser. It vapourises small amounts of tissue every time a beam of the laser is pulsed onto the surface of the eye. The diameter of the laser beam and the number of pulses are carefully controlled using computer technology.

The procedure is performed using local anaesthetic eye drops and takes between 5 and 10 minutes per eye. However, the time taken for the excimer laser to reshape the cornea is usually less than a minute.

Laser eye surgery treatment options

Laser eye surgery treatments vary depending on your needs and your condition.

In Advanced PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), the excimer laser is used once a very thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently brushed away.

In LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis), a thin flap of corneal tissue is created and gently folded back before the excimer laser reshapes the underlying tissue. The flap is then replaced in its original position to cover the newly recontoured surface.

The small amount of corneal tissue, once removed, adjusts the way light enters the eye and, in minutes, this painless procedure transforms your vision.
